<image:title>Meet the Team - RAY WILLBERN</image:title>
<image:caption>MANAGING DIRECTOR Ray Willbern is the founder and Managing Director of East African Solutions and has been working across Sub-Saharan Africa since 2010. Over the course of his career, he has advised on businesses, projects and commercial activities associated with more than US$1 billion of foreign direct investment across sectors including food and agriculture, natural resources, tourism, infrastructure, manufacturing and energy. Through this work, he has developed extensive experience working with businesses, project sponsors, investors, development finance institutions, government stakeholders and professional advisers. Ray specialises in helping businesses and project sponsors evaluate opportunities, prepare for investment and engage key stakeholders. His work combines commercial analysis, strategic thinking, financial modelling and stakeholder engagement to help organisations make informed decisions and develop opportunities capable of withstanding professional scrutiny. His approach reflects the philosophy that commercially successful opportunities are built through disciplined preparation, credible analysis and effective stakeholder engagement—not simply through documentation or introductions. Ray holds a Bachelor's degree in Management Studies from the University of Nottingham, together with professional certificates in Economics of Global Poverty from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Corporate Finance from IESE Business School, and Unlocking Investments in Emerging Markets and Developing Economies (EMDEs) from the World Bank. He works across multiple East African markets and has working proficiency in English, German, Spanish, French, Swahili and Nyanja.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - SELECTED PROJECTS Much of our work is undertaken under strict confidentiality agreements and cannot be disclosed publicly. The examples below illustrate the breadth of opportunities East African Solutions has supported across East Africa and neighbouring markets. Rather than representing a complete portfolio, they demonstrate how we help clients evaluate opportunities, prepare for investment, engage key stakeholders and make informed commercial decisions.</image:title>
<image:caption>EVALUATE OPPORTUNITIES Every successful investment begins with an informed commercial decision. Before significant capital is committed, opportunities should be evaluated against market dynamics, commercial viability, strategic fit and execution risk. We help clients assess opportunities objectively, providing the insight needed to decide whether, and how, to move forward. 1) SWEET POTATO VALUE CHAIN SECTOR: Agriculture & Agribusiness | COUNTRIES: Kenya/ Uganda Objective Evaluate the commercial viability of an export-oriented sweet potato value chain linking smallholder production in Kenya and Uganda with agro-processing and UK export markets. Our Role Assessed production capacity, processing economics, supply chain requirements and commercial viability. Outcome Identified structural yield constraints that prompted a reassessment of the proposed investment strategy before significant capital was committed. 2) RETAIL EXPANSION SECTOR: Retail | COUNTRIES: Kenya/ Tanzania Objective Support a Tanzanian retailer evaluating expansion into the Kenyan market. Our Role Assessed fifteen potential retail locations across Nairobi using commercial, demographic and operational criteria. Outcome Enabled evidence-based location selection and supported a more structured approach to market entry planning. 3) FMCG MARKET ENTRY SECTOR: FMCG | COUNTRY: Kenya Objective Evaluate the commercial potential of introducing UK fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) into the Kenyan market. Our Role Assessed pricing, competitive dynamics, import duties, supplier options and distribution channels to evaluate the commercial viability of market entry. Outcome Enabled informed decisions on product positioning, pricing and market entry strategy. 4) BAMBOO PRODUCTION & PROCESSING SECTORS: Forestry & Wood Products | COUNTRY: Rwanda Objective Evaluate the commercial viability of establishing a bamboo cultivation and processing operation in Rwanda. Our Role Assessed production economics, expected yields, land availability and supply chain considerations to determine the long-term commercial potential of the opportunity. Outcome Identified structural supply constraints that prevented commercially viable scale, avoiding investment in an unsustainable business model. 5) TIMBER VALUE ADDITION SECTORS: Forestry & Wood Products | COUNTRIES: Rwanda/ Tanzania/ Uganda Objective Evaluate opportunities for timber processing and value addition based on sustainable timber concessions and plantation resources across East Africa. Our Role Assessed processing economics, potential locations, raw material availability and commercial viability for construction materials and furniture manufacturing. Outcome Identified commercially viable processing opportunities and priority locations to support future investment decisions. 6) CASSAVA-TO-ETHANOL VALUE CHAIN SECTORS: Agriculture & Bio-Energy | COUNTRY: Rwanda Objective Evaluate the commercial potential of producing ethanol from cassava in Rwanda. Our Role Assessed production economics, financing requirements, projected operating margins and execution risks to determine commercial viability. Outcome Confirmed technical feasibility while demonstrating that commercial returns were insufficient to justify investment under prevailing market conditions. 7) URBAN DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS SECTORS: Real Estate & Urban Development | COUNTRY: Tanzania Objective Support the evaluation and development of multiple urban development concepts in Dodoma, Tanzania. Our Role Provided commercial analysis, market positioning, concept development and financial modelling across a range of proposed projects. Outcome Established commercially viable development concepts to guide future planning, investment evaluation and stakeholder discussions. 8) TECHNICAL SERVICES MARKET ENTRY SECTOR: Industrial & Technical Services | COUNTRY: Tanzania Objective Support a Belgian multinational technical services company in evaluating expansion into the Tanzanian market. Our Role Analysed market dynamics, competitive positioning and regulatory considerations to support the development of an effective market entry strategy. Outcome Strengthened the client's market entry strategy and supported informed expansion planning into Tanzania. PREPARE FOR INVESTMENT Commercially viable opportunities do not become investable through documentation alone. They become investable through disciplined commercial analysis, clear strategic positioning and robust financial planning. We help clients strengthen their commercial propositions so they are better prepared for engagement with investors, lenders and strategic partners. Many businesses assume that access to an investor is the primary barrier to raising finance. In reality, investors rarely commit capital solely because an introduction has been made. They invest in opportunities that have been thoroughly evaluated, commercially structured and strategically positioned. Our role is to help clients build that foundation before engaging potential investors. Introductions create conversations. Those conversations can feel like progress. However, it is proper preparation that secures investment—and that is when real progress begins. 9) AVOCADO SEEDLING BUSINESS SECTOR: Agriculture & Agribusiness | COUNTRY: Kenya Objective Support an organic avocado seedling business in preparing for expansion and access to growth finance. Our Role Worked with the client to strengthen its commercial proposition, growth strategy and investment case, improving its readiness for engagement with potential funding partners. Outcome Strengthened the company's investment proposition enabling the business to access growth financing. 10) SAFARI CAMP DEVELOPMENT SECTORS: Tourism & Hospitality | COUNTRY: Tanzania Objective Support the development of a safari camp within Serengeti National Park and prepare the opportunity for investment consideration. Our Role Provided market analysis, concept development, commercial positioning and financial modelling to strengthen the project's commercial viability and investment proposition. Outcome Developed a structured investment opportunity capable of supporting financing discussions and future project development, and helped the business to close financing for the project. 11) EXPORT-ORIENTED VENTURE SECTORS: Manufacturing & International Trade | COUNTRY: Tanzania Objective Prepare an export-focused business supplying East African arts, crafts and homewares to international markets. Our Role Developed the commercial strategy, business model and financial projections required to evaluate the opportunity and support investment planning. Outcome Created a commercially credible investment proposition to access financing, source from different markets, and plan for international expansion. 12) BOUTIQUE HOTEL DEVELOPMENT SECTORS: Tourism & Hospitality | COUNTRY: Tanzania Objective Support the development of a boutique hotel on a major coffee estate in Tanzania. Our Role Worked alongside the project team and architects to develop the commercial concept, market positioning and financial model for the proposed development. Outcome Strengthened the commercial foundations of the proposed development, supporting investment evaluation and project planning, enabling the business to access financing for the project. 13) INTEGRATED GRAIN STORAGE PLATFORM SECTORS: Agriculture & Agribusiness | COUNTRY: Uganda Objective Prepare an integrated grain storage platform for commercial evaluation and future investment. Our Role Evaluated the commercial opportunity and developed the strategic and financial foundations required to support project planning and future financing. Outcome Established a structured commercial framework to support the project's ongoing development. 14) HIGHWAY RETAIL & SERVICE HUB SECTORS: Commercial Real Estate | COUNTRY: Uganda Objective Support the development of a highway retail and service hub along the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway. Our Role Developed the commercial concept, strategic framework and financial planning required to evaluate the opportunity and support future investment. Outcome Strengthened the commercial proposition, providing a structured foundation for future development and investment prior to execution. ENGAGE KEY STAKEHOLDERS Even the strongest commercial opportunities rarely succeed in isolation. Securing investment, building partnerships and navigating institutional environments all depend upon engaging the right stakeholders at the right time. We help clients strengthen their commercial propositions and prepare for effective engagement with investors, government institutions, strategic partners and financing organisations. 15) TECHNOLOGY VENTURE EXPANSION SECTORS: Technology & Telecommunications | COUNTRIES: Kenya/ Uganda Objective Support a Ugandan technology venture in preparing for regional expansion into the Kenyan market. Our Role Refined the client's business model, evaluated regional expansion opportunities and strengthened its commercial proposition for engagement with investors and strategic partners. Outcome Strengthened the company's regional expansion strategy and improved its readiness for engagement with investors and strategic partners. 16) SUSTAINABLE TIMBER SUPPLY CHAIN SECTORS: Forestry & International Trade | COUNTRIES: Gabon/ Kenya Objective Support a US timber buyer in identifying sustainable timber supply opportunities across Africa while meeting demanding commercial, regulatory and ESG requirements. Our Role Evaluated timber species, supplier capabilities, forestry regulations and ESG considerations across multiple jurisdictions, identifying commercially viable sourcing opportunities within highly regulated forestry environments. Outcome The analysis and supporting documentation contributed to the client's ability to secure sustainable timber from a London Stock Exchange-listed, EU-headquartered multinational forestry company in Gabon, obtain inventory financing in Kenya, and successfully complete customs clearance for import into the United States. 17) CASHEW VALUE CHAIN SECTORS: Agriculture & Agribusiness | COUNTRIES: Tanzania/ Uganda Objective Evaluate the commercial structure of a regional cashew value chain linking production in Tanzania with distribution into Uganda. Our Role Assessed commercial arrangements, supply chain dynamics and regional distribution structures to identify opportunities for improved market efficiency. Outcome Strengthened the commercial structure of the regional value chain and informed strategic decision-making across multiple markets. 18) ALTERNATIVE PROTEIN SUPPLY SECTORS: Agriculture & Animal Nutrition | COUNTRIES: South Africa/ Tunisia Objective Identify commercially viable suppliers of insect-based protein for use within the animal feed sector. Our Role Conducted an Africa-wide assessment of supplier capabilities, production capacity and commercial considerations to identify suitable sourcing partners. Outcome Identified commercially suitable suppliers, enabling informed procurement decisions and reducing supplier selection risk. STRATEGIC ADVISORY Some strategic decisions extend beyond individual investment opportunities. Organisations also need independent commercial insight to navigate changing business environments, jurisdictional considerations, organisational development and broader market challenges. We provide strategic advisory services that help clients make informed decisions within complex and evolving operating environments. 19) Financial Centre Structuring Assessment SECTOR: Financial Services | COUNTRY: Rwanda Objective Evaluate the Kigali International Finance Centre (KIFC) as a potential jurisdiction for regional headquarters and investment structures. Our Role Assessed the commercial, regulatory and strategic advantages of establishing regional operations and investment vehicles within the Kigali International Finance Centre. Outcome Supported informed jurisdictional selection and regional investment structuring decisions. 20) Healthcare NGO (Pro Bono) SECTOR: Healthcare | COUNTRY: Rwanda Objective Support a Rwanda-based organisation providing prosthetic limbs to victims of conflict in strengthening its organisational capacity and long-term sustainability. Our Role Provided pro bono strategic advice focused on organisational effectiveness, operational development and engagement with potential funding partners. Outcome Strengthened the organisation's strategic foundations and improved its readiness for future funding and growth. 21) Environmental Initiative (Pro Bono) SECTORS: Environment & Sustainability | COUNTRY: Tanzania Objective Support the strategic development of an East Africa-focused environmental initiative. Our Role Provided pro bono advice on programme design, partnership development and funding strategy. Outcome Strengthened the initiative's strategic direction and supported the development of a more sustainable long-term programme. 22) Business Environment Assessment SECTOR: Economic Development | COUNTRY: Zambia Objective Evaluate Zambia's business environment to support informed commercial and investment decision-making. Our Role Analysed sector dynamics, policy developments and the wider business environment affecting commercial activity and investment.
